Bespoke Executive Function and Academic Coaching

Frequently Asked Questions

What is Oak & Ivy?

Oak & Ivy is a bespoke academic and executive function coaching service for students aged 13–18. We help students build the skills, strategies, and confidence they need to succeed—both in and out of the classroom. Our coaching is grounded in evidence-based practices and delivered with a warm, relationship-centred approach.

Who do you work with?

We work with students who are motivated to grow but may struggle with planning, time management, organisation, emotional regulation, or self-advocacy. Some of our students have learning differences such as ADHD, autism, or dyslexia; others simply benefit from extra support navigating the academic demands of secondary school.

Who might not be a good fit for Oak & Ivy?

While we work with a wide range of learners, Oak & Ivy is not the right fit for every student. Our coaching model is most effective for students who are motivated—or open—to growing their skills with the support of a trusted adult. Students who are being forced into coaching, show no willingness to engage, or who are experiencing significant mental health challenges that are the primary barrier to academic functioning may benefit more from clinical or therapeutic support before starting coaching. Additionally, families with unrealistic expectations or those seeking a quick fix may find our approach misaligned. We prioritise long-term growth, relationship-building, and student ownership—not just short-term academic performance. Our best outcomes happen when students, parents, and coaches work together in a spirit of trust, patience, and partnership.

How is coaching different from tutoring?

While tutoring typically focuses on subject-specific academic content (like maths or English), coaching addresses the foundational skills that support overall academic success—such as time management, organisation, motivation, emotional regulation, and self-advocacy. At Oak & Ivy, we’re not here to reteach classroom material. Instead, our coaches help students build systems, routines, and confidence so they can become more independent, self-directed learners. Coaching empowers students with tools that apply across all subjects and beyond the classroom. We will be happy to connect your child to a tutor if they need support in specific content areas.

Do you offer virtual or in-person coaching?

We offer both virtual and in-person coaching, depending on what works best for the student and their family. Some students thrive with face-to-face sessions, while others engage more comfortably online. We work with families to find the right fit based on the student’s preferences, learning style, and the practicalities of a busy schedule. Whether meeting in person at a local library or connecting online from home, our focus is always on building a strong relationship and supporting meaningful progress.

Do you collaborate with schools or other professionals?

Yes. With your permission, we can attend school meetings, coordinate with therapists, and ensure a unified support plan.

What are your coaches trained in?

Our coaches are trained in a range of evidence-based practices designed to support the whole student. This includes Universal Design for Learning (UDL), Collaborative Problem Solving (CPS), Motivational Interviewing, and executive function coaching techniques rooted in best practice. Beyond their professional training, all Oak & Ivy coaches are selected for their deep commitment to young people, unconditional positive regard, and ability to form meaningful relationships with students. Our mission is to empower your child to develop these pertinent life skills and incorporate them into their daily lives.

Do you offer support for parents?

Yes. For families enrolled in coaching, we offer optional parent coaching sessions designed to support and align with the work we’re doing with your child. These sessions help parents shift from the role of manager to mentor—supporting your child’s growth without stepping in to do the work for them. Parent coaching gives you tools to reinforce routines at home, better understand your child’s executive functioning profile, and partner with us in a shared approach. It’s about building clarity and consistency across the student’s entire support system.

What’s the process for getting started?

Getting started with Oak & Ivy is simple and supportive. First, reach out to express interest and join our waitlist. We’ll be hosting virtual information sessions in July so families can learn more. Students will then be invited to apply and participate in a short introductory call to ensure we’re a good fit. Once accepted, families pay the £150 enrolment fee, which covers our onboarding process. Students and parents complete an executive functioning assessment and share any relevant background information (such as educational or psychological evaluations). From there, the student meets with their coach to set goals across our four core domains: Root, Reflect, Rise, and Reach. Coaching officially begins in September, with sessions tailored to meet each student’s needs.
